The Coca-Cola Co. unveils lighter-weight PET bottles for its sparkling beverage portfolio, aiming to bolster sustainability and circularity in packaging.

Redesigned Coke, Fanta, and Sprite Bottles

The company introduces revamped PET bottles for Coca-Cola, Sprite, Fanta, Minute Maid Refreshments, and Minute Maid Aguas Frescas, featuring new shapes designed to use less raw material.

Innovative Bottle Design for Sustainability

Alejandro Santamaria, Senior Director for Global Packaging Development and Innovation, explains the breakthrough in modeling technology, reducing bottle weight to 18.5 grams while maintaining durability and functionality.

Sustainability Benefits and Environmental Impact

The transition to lighter-weight bottles is projected to reduce new plastic use by 800 million bottles in 2025 and cut carbon emissions equivalent to removing over 17,000 cars from the road for a year. It aligns with Coca-Cola’s World Without Waste goals, emphasizing recyclability and recycled content.

Expansion and Future Prospects

The redesigned bottles will gradually roll out across the U.S. and Canada, with potential applications for multiserve bottles. Coca-Cola North America also plans to transition a significant portion of its still beverages portfolio to aseptic processing, reducing plastic and energy use.

Collaboration for Recycling Infrastructure

The Coca-Cola Co. collaborates with Circular Solutions Advisors, Final Four venues, and local material recovery facilities to enhance recycling infrastructure. At the Final Four events, additional recycling bins and Green Teams will promote recycling awareness among fans.

Continuing Commitment to Closed-Loop Recycling

Properties like State Farm Stadium and Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse maintain their status as certified closed loops for beverage packaging, ensuring sustained efforts beyond the 2024 championship.

Previous Successes and Future Initiatives

Coca-Cola’s partnership with NCAA Men’s & Women’s Final Four tournaments has led to significant recycling achievements in past events, underscoring its commitment to environmental stewardship.
