Nestlé Teams Up with Top Shipping Companies for Eco-Friendly Transport

In a significant move towards sustainable shipping, Nestlé, the renowned Swiss food and beverage giant, has partnered with leading container shipping companies Hapag-Lloyd and CMA CGM. This collaboration aims to advance cleaner and greener shipping methods, marking a pivotal step in environmental responsibility within the shipping industry.

Hapag-Lloyd’s “Ship Green” Initiative: A Game-Changer

Hapag-Lloyd’s innovative “Ship Green” program has been selected by Nestlé for all their shipping needs in 2023. This program focuses on reducing emissions, helping Nestlé inch closer to its ambitious goal of achieving a net-zero greenhouse gas emissions footprint. By replacing conventional marine fuel oil with biofuels made from waste and residues, “Ship Green” allows customers like Nestlé to significantly lower their transport emissions.

CMA CGM’s Biofuel Deal: Cutting Emissions Drastically

Nestlé’s agreement with French shipping magnate CMA CGM is another cornerstone of its green shipping strategy. Under this deal, Nestlé will power all its shipments with biofuel through CMA CGM, leading to an impressive 84% reduction in carbon emissions. This translates to an annual avoidance of 70,000 tons of CO2, a major environmental win.

Maersk Joins the Green Shipping Effort

The green shipping wave doesn’t stop there. Nestlé is also set to work with Danish shipping firm Maersk. The plan is to transition half of Nestlé’s global shipping needs to alternative fuels that emit fewer greenhouse gases. By using fuels made from waste materials like used cooking oil, Nestlé aims to slash its annual shipping-related greenhouse gas emissions by around 200,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent.

Nestlé’s Comprehensive Approach to Sustainability

Stephanie Hart, Nestlé’s Executive Vice President and Head of Operations, emphasizes that reaching net-zero emissions involves changing various aspects of sourcing, manufacturing, and distributing products. The agreements with these shipping giants are more than a temporary fix; they’re a step towards encouraging long-term, sustainable solutions in shipping and distribution.

These partnerships, encompassing half of Nestlé’s shipping volumes for 2023, reflect a growing commitment in the industry to adopt alternative, environmentally friendlier fuels in maritime operations.
