Grupo Bimbo to Amplify Electric Vehicle Fleet in Mexico, Aiming for Net-Zero Carbon Emissions by 2050
Grupo Bimbo SAB de CV, a leading Mexican multinational bakery product manufacturing company, has announced plans to expand its electric delivery vehicle fleet in Mexico from 1,168 to a whopping 2,508 by the close of 2023. This move aligns with the company’s ambitious targets to slash both direct and indirect CO2 emissions by half by 2030 and achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
The company revealed that these state-of-the-art vehicles, powered entirely by renewable electricity, are gradually being integrated into their operations across various Mexican cities. This initiative is projected to prevent the release of approximately 6,600 tonnes of CO2 equivalent, akin to nurturing 250,000 trees.
A closer look at the new additions to the fleet:
- Veskar Stellar Vans: 1,001 units of these vans, boasting over 80-mile autonomy and a 1.3 million-gram load capacity, have been incorporated. These vehicles, tailored to meet Grupo Bimbo’s specific needs, were crafted with lightweight materials by the company’s subsidiary, Moldex. Acquired in September 2022, they serve the Bimbo and Barcel branches.
- JAC e10x Vehicles: Over 300 of these compact vehicles, designed for optimal city mobility, can journey up to an impressive 155 miles and meet high safety benchmarks.
- Scania Trucks: 15 of these self-service delivery trucks, equipped with cutting-edge safety tech like fatigue detection, lane prevention cameras, and emergency braking assistants, are a first in Latin America and are exclusively for Grupo Bimbo.
- BYD Brand Tractors: Six of these tractors, with nearly 150-mile travel capacity, are equipped with advanced safety features, thanks to their extended battery life. These are the company’s inaugural primary distribution electric vehicles.
Grupo Bimbo’s journey with electric vehicles began in 2013, in collaboration with Moldex. That year also saw the inauguration of their first eco-sales center in Mexico City’s heart, a testament to their commitment to environmental preservation. The company has since invested heavily in infrastructure for these vehicles, with 20 eco-sales centers currently in operation. An additional 15 will be transformed by year-end.
Jorge Zarate, Grupo Bimbo’s Vice President of Global Operations, remarked, “Our decision to double our electric vehicle fleet within a year underscores our dedication to sustainability. Grupo Bimbo Mexico stands at the forefront, showcasing its leadership in Latin America with the largest electric vehicle fleet.”
This expansion is a cornerstone of Grupo Bimbo’s ‘For Nature’ sustainability strategy, emphasizing a shift from mitigation to regeneration, encapsulating the company’s vision of being inherently sustainable.
