In a move that’s sending shockwaves through the food industry, Conagra Brands, Inc. has announced a significant recall of its popular Banquet frozen chicken strip meals. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) confirmed that over 245,000 pounds of these meals are being pulled from shelves due to potential plastic contamination.
Details of the Recall
The affected chicken strip meals, which have become a staple in many American households, carry best-before dates of Dec. 11, 2024; Jan. 1, 2025; or Jan. 7, 2025. These products were manufactured on specific dates in 2023: June 20, July 11, and July 17.
Consumers should be on the lookout for 8.9-oz. boxes labeled ‘BANQUET CHICKEN STRIPS MEAL.’ These boxes will have best-before dates and batch numbers 5009317120, 5009319220, or 5009319820 printed on the side.
Consumer Safety First
This recall was initiated after a concerning report where a consumer experienced an oral injury after consuming one of these meals. The issue was flagged to FSIS when Conagra Brands received a complaint about plastic found in the chicken strip.
For those who’ve purchased these meals, it’s crucial to check the packaging. The affected items are marked with the code “EST. P-9.” These products were not only distributed to brick-and-mortar stores but were also available for purchase online.
As of now, FSIS has not received any additional reports of injuries or illnesses related to these chicken strips. However, they urge consumers to approach with caution and consult a healthcare provider if they have any health concerns.
A Pattern of Recalls?
This isn’t the first time Conagra Brands has faced such issues. Earlier this year, the company had to recall almost 2.6 million pounds of canned Vienna sausages and chicken items. The reason? Potential contamination stemming from packaging anomalies.
